Position Summary:


The GI Registered Nurse will provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in the gastroenterology setting, focusing on assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for patients undergoing gastrointestinal procedures and surgeries. The GI RN will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best outcomes for patients, providing excellent care throughout their treatment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

●     Provide direct and indirect nursing care for patients undergoing GI surgeries and procedures, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.
●     Assess, diagnose, and identify patient needs to determine appropriate care plans for GI patients.
●     Develop, implement, and evaluate care plans in collaboration with surgeons and other healthcare professionals.

●     Supervise and direct nursing care activities, ensuring adherence to clinical standards, policies, and protocols.
●     Provide education to patients and families on pre-and post-procedure care and GI health.
●     Monitor patient status, recognizing and responding to changes in condition, and taking appropriate action to ensure patient safety.
●     Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, documenting care, changes in patient condition, and nursing interventions.
●     Administer medications, treatments, and diagnostic procedures according to established protocols.
●     Work closely with the gastroenterology team to ensure timely procedures and interventions are carried out.
●     Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care outcomes and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

●     Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
●     Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois.
●     CPR certification (current).
●     ACLS certification preferred (required for critical care and ER settings).
●     PALS certification required for ER and Pediatrics.
●     NRP certification required for Special Care Nursery.
●     Ability to quickly recognize changes in a patient’s condition and respond with appropriate interventions.
●     Strong understanding of patient growth and development, and ability to address patient needs accordingly.
●     Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of nursing care.
●     Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to educate patients and families effectively.
●     Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment and provide leadership when necessary.
●     Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in a fast-paced environment.

Must-Have Requirements:

●     Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
●     Current RN license in the State of Illinois.
●     Current CPR certification.
●     ACLS certification (preferred).
●     PALS certification (required for ER and Pediatrics).
●     NRP certification (required for Special Care Nursery).
●     Ability to recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.
●     Knowledge of patient’s growth and development needs.
●     High degree of accuracy in performing nursing duties.
●     At least 1 year of stability with each hospital (travel nurses & contract nurses will not be considered).
